A TRIBUTE TO OUR FOUNDER
Born in the small Bavarian town of Nordheim vor der Rhön,
Arthur Shuster toiled as a child apprentice in the textile
trade, soon discovering a talent for spotting quality
goods and predicting forthcoming trends in the texture,
color and patterns of fabric. That ‘eye’ served him well
as he immigrated to the United States in 1934 and worked
as a textile buyer for department stores in Atlanta and
Chicago. Arriving in St. Paul in 1942, Mr. Shuster began
representing furniture items as well as fabrics for his
employer Joesting and Schilling and later, Asslesins.
(Prior to this time, little thought was given to the overall
design of commercial facilities. This was especially true
for utilitarian operations such as restaurants and hospitals,
whose practical functions overshadowed all other considerations
of design.) By the early 1950s, Arthur expanded his offerings
to include wall coverings, draperies, carpeting and a
much overlooked design component: Lighting. Without realizing
it, he was developing one of the nation’s first contract
furnishing departments. Although he was well compensated
for his creativity and hard work, Mr. Shuster yearned
to run his own business his own way and so, on March 1,
1959, with little to his name but the name itself, he
founded Arthur Shuster, Inc. one of the nation’s first
full service contract furnishing companies. Although he
retired in 1994, Mr. Shuster’s enthusiasm, his personal
interest in each and every employee and his dedication
and warmth to our many clients can still be felt at Arthur
Shuster, Inc. today. |
CHAIRMAN
Drafted into service with his father’s company in 1959
while attending the University of Minnesota, Stan established
himself as an innovator in his company and in the industry
from the start. His leadership can be felt at every level
of the firm while his volunteer work with numerous organizations
over the years, including his current role as a fundraiser
for AAHSA, benefit the industry today as it has for the
past 48 years. |
